Here's the story of the waterspout that touched down on the St. John's River a mile from my office. (As told by my designer Stephanie)

Just something fun my friend JP sent over. I'm sure everyone will differ on whether the ratings are accurate or fair, but if you read down in the left corner, they did a comprehensive study of other rankings, so it's a little hard to argue...

So glad Valentine's is out of the way. You can make fun of me all you want, but Riverdance was pretty cool, even if I was the last person on earth who hadn't seen it.

// Thursday
This is a pretty full week starting with the Design Co-op Happy Hour. It's invitation-only, but let me know and I'll get you on the list. It's always a good time. Here's pix from the last one.

Rebecca Zapen is playing at playing at European Street from 8:30-10.

alt: G-Love & Special Sauce at Freebird.

// Friday
Grotto Homecoming. The past owner of the Grotto, Chad, is making a brief visit to Jacksonville. He'll be at the Grotto on Friday so I'm certain the bubbly will be flowing. There may be some Eclipse action afterward.

Great Guitar Gathering @ Florida Theatre - Would love to attend this.

alt: Cowboy Mounted Shooting Competition @ Florida Equestrian Center - It could be fun...

It's going to be a great evening. $25 all you can drink (even less with the "Jeff & Lisa" promo code.) Expecting several hundred people. Red carpet, Oscar statues, Jesse and Chris aren't messing around.

Hope to see you there.

About a month ago Janet Owens with the United Way approached Harrington Design to help with marketing strategy for a viral campaign. The concept was beautifully simple. Give $5 and ask 5 of your friends to give $5.

Easy enough right? Well, the Twin Cities launched a similar campaign and it flopped. Viral marketing is harder than it seems. You can't force something to be viral. It either is or it is not. Our task was to develop a strategy and oversee the development of a Flash Movie, testimonial video and Web site. In about 4 weeks. I worked closely with Dianne Austria, the United Way's in house designer to design and build the materials.

Thanks to the amazing team of Melanie Husk, John Willman, Craig TerBlanche, Wendy Hummel, Elizabeth Ash and others who helped put this together.

So that was the easy part. Now we have to spread the word. We are looking for people who have active social networks to blog, tweet, facebook, LinkIn, IM the heck out this. And of course, give your 5.

So what are you waiting for? Seriously, do it now.

Netflix's biggest threat? No, it's not Blockbuster, OnDemand, or AppleTV. The biggest threat to Netflix is... USPS and their potential cut of mail service down to five days a week. After I got over my initial shock (because how is such a thing even possible?), I thought 'OMG! How am I going to get my Netflix on Saturdays?' And eventually, that will occur to other Netflix customers, too. After a while, even unlimited streaming of older, less-in-demand movies can't compensate. Is this a drop in perceived value? If DVDs don't arrive when we want to watch them most, will we protest for lower rates or leave all together? This is where design, strategy, and national security are the most difficult -- a failure of imagination. I hope Netflix has more imaginative minds than me, and can find a way to continue their high level of customer satisfaction.

Best of Jacksonville Party // Thursday, January 15 from 6-8:30 // Buy tickets here.
Hey peeps, last week I mentioned MOCA's Annual Fundraiser. I've become more involved with the Museum lately and love all the exhibits, educational programs and their commitment to community involvement. Despite the cut in support for the Arts, MOCA continues to plow forward with new and innovative offerings.

If you don't care about any of that, did I mention it's a huge party with free food, music, tons of people and the Cover Model Search? Hello?

Alt idea: Emergence - The Best of What's Next @ Fogle Fine Art

3rd Saturday @ 3 Layers "Dulcet Perks" w/Catharsis
Been meaning to check out the new coffee shop, Three Layers, in Springfield. They have this dessert called "Jeff Squares" that I hear are amazing. (Talk about pinpoint marketing!) If you're out that way swing by and get a piece of me.

Thanks to everyone who came to Chops last Saturday
I laughed, I cried, I cheered. It was a wonderful movie followed by a performance from four members of the original Douglas Anderson band.

Sorry I haven't been posting pics lately, I'm getting back into the swing of things.

Angel-Aid-Fundraiser-2008-55, originally uploaded by toephoto.

A colleague of mine, Rena Rettinger and I put together this fundraiser to support Angel Aid. Rena did 95% of the work. But I did get some great photos from that night.

The hallmark of any great blog is connecting with your readers with relevant insightful content. Since I have no readers, I can write about whatever I want.

Folgle-ing around: One of the better galleries in the San Marco area is Fogle Fine Art and Accessories. I have my eye on some vases, which will become mine once I get a few extra dollars. And by mine I mean a gift for a special someone.

Eventraiture: For someone who doesn't like shooting events, I sure have been busy. Here are some photos from the nGenWorks Fifth Anniversary. You can find other event photos on my Flickr site.

Obama-rama: Tuesday night I joined my good friend Efferem Williams at his Wine Bar Election night victory party.  He said it was non-partisan and true his word, I made sure McCain was representin'. I put together a few of my election favorites such as "It's the end of the world as we know it" and Public Enemy's "Don't believe the hype." Some said my subversive playlist was a weak attempt to sabotage the party. How could I have known Obama would win by a landslide? He-he.

Speaking of Obama: Congrats to him for a well-fought campaign. The GOP is suffering and needs to come to grips with its weak, pathetic brand. I've been doing my own soul-searching. No, I'm not switching parties but I have realized that the voting demographic is changing. What worked for Reagan in 1980 simply doesn't resonate today. Our principles shouldn't change, but our packaging and presentation must. I've found some true believers like Andy Rutledge.

A saga of orphan work and competing designers. But in the end, we get to meet the man who designed the logo for Major League Baseball, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Stop Action 4, originally uploaded by toephoto.

This is one frame from a series of stop action shots I did last month. Christian is doing flips off a friend's boat. I'm snapping with my new 40D, which captures 6.5 frames per second.

Check it.

Malcolm AnthonyWe're excited to be relaunching Malcolm Anthony's new Web site. Malcolm is one of the most experienced DUI and criminal defense attorneys in North Florida. Our challenge was to position his firm as "The Beaches Lawyer" and we did so by designing a bright and approachable site with simple, yet engaging graphics.

Chris Salvador, the lead designer, employed a slew of new AJAX techniques to make the site more user-friendly.

Take a look and let me know what you think. And look for the coasters we designed for him at your favorite beach bar.

God forbid, you ever get into trouble but if do, call Malcolm at 285-4LAW. As a matter of fact, put that number into your cell right now. Cause ya' neva know.

I've been saying for years that ADD isn't a deficiency, it's just a new mindset not readily accepted or understood by those who don't have it.

I've also thought that traditional media (broadcast TV, the mainstream music and movie industries, etc.) spend too much time and energy being afraid of new technology when they are some of the few who have the capital and power to be early adopters.

Here's ever-more support for my theories.
